Low band loafing

I didn’t get on the radio until late this evening, so I decided to stick to the 60m band in the main, with a bit of a listen on the 49m band, before the laptop battery gave up.

Propagation seems to have recovered somewhat from the past few days. I have a number of ‘check’ frequencies I use, and one of these is ABC Alice Springs on 4835. For me, with just the PL-600 and a 15m long wire, good propo. means receiving Alice at about the S2 level, S3 if I am lucky. I can usually make out talking and music, but due to static crashes and general noise, cannot make out individual words. And that’s how it was this evening. Which is a bit frustrating, as with a little less noise then I would actually be able to hear what was being said.

A first this evening was being to just able to hear ABC from Katherine in the Northern Territories on 5025 Khz. Quickly flipping between 4835 and 5025, I could detect it was the same transmission. But this was about the S1 – S2 level, again plagued by lots of static and general QRM.
